Overview
The Art Matters archive is a living resource sustained by the artists we support. Encompassing artists’ proposals, process documentation, reports, and ephemera, the archive gives vivid insight into artists’ thinking as it evolves and unravels over time.

2007–2019 Art Matters Artist Files Collection
From June 1–October 1, 2026, the Art Matters 2007–2019 Artist Files Collection will be available to the public for the first time through an archives-in-residence program at Visual AIDS. Featuring paper records, physical media, and a fully digitized library of photos and videos, the collection represents the work of over 380 artists who have received grants from Art Matters.

1982–1996 Art Matters, Inc. Records
The 1982–1996 Art Matters, Inc. Records are held at the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Among these materials are Art Matters’ institutional records, including audio recordings, videotapes, written artist applications, and correspondence. While there is not yet a finding aid for this collection, Art Matters staff may be able to help facilitate access to these records upon request.
